For teachers who have carefully laid a solid foundation, the work at previous reading stages is fully realized at the Fledgling stage. These students, although inexperienced, are equipped with the knowledge necessary to begin applying their decoding and comprehension strategies. Fledgling readers can easily read text featuring simple sentence structures with significant picture support. About halfway through this stage, students will complete their study of the first 100 high-frequency words, and vocabulary will transition to the study of words selected from the text. Supported by this increased high-frequency word knowledge, Fledgling readers will also make great advances in their instructional book levels.

The difference between Stages 3A and 3B is solely with word study. This stage is divided into two parts: Stage 3A focuses on common word families, and Stage 3B is centered on one-syllable words with short-vowel sounds (in the predictable CVC pattern) that no longer rhyme. This stage is particularly exciting for new writers. Fledgling writers bring with them solid alphabet and sound knowledge, along with the knowledge of numerous high-frequency words. By the end of the stage, students will be able to write four or five sentences that show understanding of a text. They will also respond to text for a specific purpose, such as writing about a problem and solution, writing to summarize the story, writing to discuss character traits. or writing about the main idea and supporting details.

Using carefully leveled books continues to be critical for success in early reading. For Fledgling readers and writers, choose texts that contain a variety of sentence patterns and punctuation. Both narrative and informational texts with moderate picture support should be considered. Books that contain high-frequency words and easily decodable words are also important when making text selections. These texts will increase in difficulty and provide a foundation for deeper reading comprehension.

Fledgling readers will generally complete the first 100 high-frequency words by the end of this stage. Once they do this, don't waste time moving on to another word list. These students will continue to practice automatic high-frequency word recognition as they read the text. Focus instead on reading the text and selecting vocabulary words for intentional focus.

Fledgling readers and writers essentially address common kindergarten and 1st grade language arts standards. As we reach this stage, the number of standards that are addressed in the lesson plan increase. Standards that support the lesson components for the Fledgling stage can be found in the Appendix. I provide this list for busy teachers so they can easily identify the standards that support or could support the lesson plan model.
